Virtual assistant vs. in-house hire: how to choose

Many owners reach a point where they need help but aren’t sure whether to hire an employee or work with a remote team. Both can work. The right choice depends on what you need done.

Cost structure

An employee brings salary, benefits, equipment, workspace, training, and recruiting time. Remote support is typically paid as a service, so you carry less overhead and can start sooner.

Coverage

One person can only do so much, and holidays or sickness leave a gap. A remote team can cover for each other, so your operations keep moving.

Flexibility

Workloads change. With remote support you can add hours during a busy season and scale back afterwards. Changing the hours of a full-time employee is much harder.

Management time

An employee needs day-to-day management. A support team that owns a documented process needs less direction once it’s running.

When in-house still makes sense

Roles that must be on site, or that carry deep decision-making and company culture, are often better as employees. Many growing companies use both: employees for the core, remote support for the rest.
